Debi Buzil learned Sanskrit chanting from her mother at a young age. Debi is the co-founder of Devi 2000, Chicago’s premier kirtan group. Their three albums — “Devotional,” “Prepare Your Soul to Dance,” and “Kum Kum” — are rooted in Bhakti Yoga, the path of love. Debi has studied music in the motherlands of Brazil, India and the U.S. At present, she is the music editor at Yoga Chicago. Debi has been blessed to have taught yoga to adults, kids. homeless teens and the ladies in her neighborhood’s women’s shelter. A longtime devotee of Amma, the “hugging saint,” Debi laughs with her kids every day. Her two children have proven to be her greatest teachers. Debi is a firm believer in love.

You know her from her column, “Sutra in the City,” but Deborah (Debi) Buzil is also a yoga practitioner, writer and mother of two. One of her strongest callings is to music. She leads Kirtan (chant), writes and records music with her ensemble, Devi 2000. She has been honored to perform with Devi 2000 at Bhakti Fest Midwest, the Iyengar Yoga National Conference, the Hindu Temple in Lemont, Michigan Women’s Music Festival, and other interfaith events. Her work has even been featured on TV shows like “The L Word” and “Saturday Night Live.” With an ability to play anything from spiritual rock to funky tribal music, Debi dedicates her numerous musical projects to building bridges between truth, art and culture. Debi is addicted to her Fitbit and truly enjoys her bowspring practice, something she learned about through her time with Illumine.
On working with Illumine:
“Illumine, like its name, is intent on lighting up the truth. My column, “Sutra in the City,” takes on everyday contemporary quandaries, using spiritual truths from the Yoga Sutras and other sources to move from darkness into light. Through the Illumine Community I’ve made heart connections with local folks who have made a difference in my life. I hope to share wisdom through my articles, and give readers something timeless and positive. So many good things come from Illumine!”
