Community Event Review

Small nuances and perfect cues delivered exceptional workshop, according to student at Maty Ezraty‘s recent workshop at yogaview Nov. 15 to 17.

I have been a yoga practitioner for 13 years, and am still amazed that I am always learning.

I have gone through periods of time where my practice has served me well, where my practice has bored me and where my practice makes me feel 100 years old or 20 years old depending on the day.

One of the many things I love about yoga is that it can surprise me as Maty Ezraty’s workshop did at yogaview this past month.

As she is one of the only women certified by Guruji, I hold Maty as one of the most senior and educated teacher’s teacher we have in our community today. With her love of Iyengar yoga, Maty has combined a workshop for ashtangis with an emphasis on strong alignment.

As most workshops go, there was very little flow and a whole lot of holding long poses. I have heard that holding poses in the correct alignment for a period of time allows the body to remember the muscular and skeletal alignment. Well, certainly my muscles remembered the workshop for days after.

The small nuances and the perfect cues allowed me to move in different ways in the poses and explore new sensations.

Alisa Kannett has been practicing yoga for 14 years, and has completed a 500-hour teacher training. She currently teaches at Cook County Jail. For more information, visit www.yogaforrecovery.org.
