Gidget, The Flying Nun, Norma Rae, Mrs. Gump, Mary Todd Lincoln, women’s right’s activist, singer, yogini, daughter to breast cancer victim. And just plain adorable at 67 years old. Who is it? Sally Field.
Sally Field was the celebrity keynote speaker at the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation annual luncheon at the Hilton Chicago on Tuesday, October 14th. Over 950 supporters gathered to honor the memory of Lynn Sage, a 39 year of working mother of 2 who lost her battle with breast cancer in 1978. The organization has raised nearly $30 million over the past 29 years.
Sally held back tears while telling the story of her mother’s 10-year battle with breast cancer. But she quickly bounced back to tell tales about her career as an actress and voice of women’s rights. Sally grew up in Southern California and surprised the audience when she declared that she actually likes the cold, bitter, horrible Chicago winter weather. “It’s so exciting! In California, the weather is always the same. You have to look at the calendar to know what month it is.”
Bill Zwecker of the Chicago SunTimes and Fox32 News asked Sally how she stays in such great shape. Sally credited her youthful, slim appearance to the fact that she used to do Yoga “24 hours a day”. But now mostly, she joked, she is just always hungry. Sally couldn’t name her favorite acting role. Looking back, her memories of characters she played were always tied in to her personal life at the time. But winning an Academy Award made her feel like her “work worked”. She felt a degree of excellence at that moment in time.
Sally Field is proud to use her fame and celebrity to support women’s causes. She seems to connect with people on screen and in-person with a winning combination of humility, humor and compassion. We really like her!
