On Thursday, March 31, 2016, Chicago welcomed Kathryn Budig on the second stop of her national book tour for “Aim True.”
Book Tour in Chicago
VibeUP, a Chicago-based yoga event organization led by Luke Jensen, gathered about 500 people for the book release and yoga class at Block Thirty Seven. The raw space was transformed into a bustling marketplace with sponsors, vendors, artists and body workers. Budig was welcomed warmly by yoga enthusiasts who followed along with her asana-inspired movements, from “feisty cat” to “angry baby” and other playful versions of traditional poses.
Teachers and teaching
Budig’s teachers and mentors prepared and guided her toward becoming one of America’s most well-known and loved yoga teachers. She has been influenced by icons from the Los Angeles yoga community, including Maty Ezraty, Chuck Miller, Seane Corn and Annie Carpenter and has taught since 2004.
Budig takes seriously her responsibility to train new yoga teachers in this day and age where trainings are ubiquitous. They often serve as profitable programs for many studios. With the popularization of yoga, Budig trusts that the practice has persevered and continues to grow after thousands of years. However she is wary that the practice gets diluted as the numbers of newly trained teachers increase.
People can experience her teaching by streaming classes on services like YogaGlo or enrolling in her retreats and workshops around the country.
Aim True
Budig’s book is noticeably accessible and enjoyable to hold in your hands and read. It matches the feeling that Kathryn promotes in her book — the feeling of easy love and nourishing community that ideally is the yoga lifestyle. She encourages people to feel comfortable in their own skin and promotes a non-judgmental outlook. She hopes this serves as a guide for people in all aspects of life.
“Aim True” is a substantial offering of insight and resources. Budig shares from her personal experience and collaborates with experts to offer recipes, yoga sequences and creative exercises. Everything about the book is approachable. From the soft, rounded corners to hand-drawn designs on the pages, it feels like she has invited us into her home to have a conversation, maybe even a pep talk, on how to find and move in the right direction of living our best lives.
This book is the girlfriend’s guide to yoga and life. Budig’s title, “Aim True,” comes from her early experience of knowing and loving the stories of Greek mythology, in particular the story of the goddess Artemis and her bow and arrows. This story served as a guiding light early in Budig’s life and again later at a poignant moment.
In the age of social media, Budig has experienced both the positive and negative consequences of being in the public eye. With currently 193K followers on Instagram, she often gets positive interaction with followers and fans and inevitably must endure a judgmental comment. But she models the need for boundaries between her personal and professional life and accepts that this is the price of being a public figure.
During Budig’s visit, the positive feedback and response to her book and to her class definitely overshadowed any negativity. People were so happy to come together and practice with such an inspirational, empowering teacher. She is looking forward to the next chapter of offering insight on lifestyle, and her fans can’t wait to hear what else she has to say.
