January 2014 begins on a New Moon night. Lunar phases indicate an emotional tone for an event. New Moon (Sanskrit – Amavasya) indicates the end of darkness and beginning of new hope. In the exact chart of midnight (Central Time zone), we see a prominent Mars on the Ascendant signifying that control, conflict and career will be the three C’s that will be a very prominent energy in the year.
Major transits in January 2014 –
January 5 – Venus (retrograde) changes sign from Capricorn to Sagittarius. Venus, which turned retrograde on December 21, changes signs. This indicates that the expression of love and compassion which was being worked on from December 21 will undergo a change. Relationships which were not meant to last will go and any romantic relationship which was superficial will gradually transform or not.
January 8 – Mercury changes sign from Sagittarius to Capricorn. The focus on work and money will increase. The realization that the livelihood needs to be concentrated on will resurface as a primary focus.
January 5th to 8th, there will be a crossover of Venus and Mercury between the signs Sagittarius and Capricorn. It indicates that romantic ideas and the pragmatism will undergo a switch.
January 14 – Sun changes sign from Sagittarius to Capricorn. The focus on work and pragmatism will regain importance in life and new initiatives will begin towards it.
January 26 – Mercury changes sign from Capricorn to Aquarius. There will be a proneness to relax and enjoy from the hectic daily life. A probability of a break from usual work is generally signified. Learning something new and acquiring new skills is also strongly indicated. The focus will be innovation and creativity.

January 1 – Moon strongly under the influence of the Sun, Saturn and Mars together signifies some accidents or unexpected sorrowful event. Strong caution should be maintained during driving or travels. However, the aspect of Jupiter provides some solace but being retrograde it could signify that wisdom prevails after an unfortunate event and not before it.
January 4, 5 – Moon under the influence of Rahu and Jupiter (retrograde). This shows a tremendous desire to have something mature or become fruitful but disappointment in that matter.
January 7, 8 – Moon under the influence of Mars. Frustration and the feeling of being taken granted may overcome people. If caution is not maintained, words can go out of control and unanticipated adverse results may have to be faced.
January 9, 10 – Moon under the influence of the lunar nodes (Rahu – Ketu), Saturn, Mars and the Sun. Days when frustration, anxiety and sorrow may hit together. It is strongly advised not to act in haste for making any decision that day.
January 15 – Moon under the influence of Jupiter, Venus and Rahu. One of the best days of the month. Even though there might be anxiety, there will be peace and joy.
January 17, 18 – Moon under the influence of Saturn, Sun and Mercury. Caution should be maintained over the words spoken and actions done.
January 22 – Moon conjunct Mars. Caution should be maintained towards the anger the frustration that this day can generate.
January 24, 25 – Moon conjunct the nodes and Saturn. This time can be disappointing and sorrowful.
January 29 – Moon conjunct Venus (Retrograde) and aspected by Saturn and Mars. Disappointment in desired results can generate sorrow and frustration.
The important dates are mentioned here not to generate any panic or anxiety. In fact, these dates are very generic in nature and may not influence every individual the same way. These should be just taken as a generic guideline for the month. Those with a spiritual life may not even feel any of the negative impacts of some of these dates.
