There are several exciting yoga events happening around Chicago this holiday weekend. I spent Wednesday with Illumine founder Lourdes Parades at the VIBEUP event “Yoga Under the Lights” at Navy Pier. The pier was packed with great energy at a really cool venue – despite the unseasonal cool weather.
The purpose of VIBEUP is to bring the community together through “activity-centric social events.” Wednesday’s activity was a vinyasa flow led by well-known yoga teacher Wade Gotwals to the music of D.J. Madrid. We were at the far end of Navy Pier, with the sun setting and the skyline brightening, in perfect position to see the full moon rising to the east and an unobstructed view of the Navy Pier fireworks show. Unfortunately, the flow didn’t quite align with the start of the fireworks, so Wade instructed us to skip savasana to see the sky light up.
Various vendors, including Essentia Water and Passion House Coffee Roasters, offered samples before the yoga began. As we moved toward our mats, everywhere I turned yogis were finding familiar faces to reconnect with or making new connections. The laid back attitude of the organizers helped create a sense of familiarity within the group.
If you’re looking for a way to meet new yoga friends and learn more about VIBEUP’s mission, I’d recommend looking into the upcoming calendar of events. Pre-sale tickets for Wednesday’s event sold out, so you might want to plan ahead for the Yoga Full Moon Social on July 31st in the West Loop.
