As yoga continues its upswing in popularity, “yoga therapy” will become the buzz-words in the future. Yoga therapists are just beginning to be trained (though many have been in existence for years) through certification programs. In fact, the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT), the governing organization of yoga therapists, has just started accrediting particular programs that meet its very high program standards – so far only 17 schools have received program accreditation.
Chicagoland is very lucky to be home to one of the first certified yoga therapists – Laura Jane Murphy Mellencamp, Director of Yoga Among Friends in Downers Grove. It has always been Laura Jane’s dream to bring Yoga Therapy to Chicagolands’ yoga community. To this end, Laura Jane is teaming up with JJ Gormley, a nationally known yoga therapist and Director of the Surya Chandra Healing Yoga School, to offer Chicagoland’s first Yoga Therapy Certificate Program at Yoga Among Friends. This program is set to begin this April, culminating in 300hr yoga therapy certificate in April 2016.
Students of this program will study how to use the various tools of yoga (poses, meditation, & attentive breathing) to help heal mental and physical ailments. Learning in the teachings of Krischnamacharya, students will receive in-depth training in yoga’s multi-dimensional holistic approach to health.

I’d love to hear more about when the program launches and what it entails. I’ve recently relocated to the Chicago area and am VERY interested in participating in the YT certification program.
