illumine is the premier wellness-lifestyle media platform in Chicago, a visually engaging digital presence and quarterly print issues, with opportunities in print, digital and social media, as well as events and native advertising. It is associated with well-established advertisers, partners, writers and content. Our audience is 25-65 years old, women and men who actively live a productive and engaged life, focus on health and wellness, and elevate their life through community and personal growth.

illumine seeks a highly collaborative, creative and organized Managing Editor, with a keen eye for newsworthy and useful wellness content, and a flair for presenting content in an engaging manner to produce a quarterly print magazine and online content.

Editorial Cycle

12-18 weeks: *approximate breakdown of editorial cycle: 10-15 hours a week for 8-10 weeks, 20-30+ hours a week for 6 weeks, 5-10 hours for 2 weeks

Key Responsibilities:

Editorial Cycle:

collaborate with founder and art director on vision for each issue
develop editorial production calendar
review article pitches
generate article topics
create page budget to determine content needs
assign articles to writers
communicate deadlines to writers and editorial staff
work with writers to vet article topics and sources and accompanying art
edit and revise all articles, working with writers and editorial consultant(s), to align with illumine‘s tone and style
develop content such as features and departments
work with editorial team to proof entire book before submitting to printer
liaise with printer on all printing and distribution matters, engaging illumine staff when necessary
assist with magazine distribution

Ongoing responsibilities:

collaborate with founder on email marketing newsletters, events, marketing, digital and social media strategy
create writer and editorial board meeting agendas
lead writer and editorial board meetings alongside founder
recruit and train new writers and editors

The ideal Managing Editor will be:

the holder of a BA or BS degree in Journalism
experienced in editorial management and reporting
averse to grammatical and syntactical errors
talented in managing people and deadlines
organized to a fault
open, collaborative and flexible
passionate about community, health and wellness; and writing and telling stories that elevate.
energized about inspiring the curious, health-and-fitness-minded community of Chicago

Our team is small and mighty, and we are looking for a strong team player. Most of the work can be done remote and flexible with your schedule, but around print deadline times, it’s all hands on deck.
